Bloomington and Normal boast all the common shopping opportunities of a major midwest city. Note that all city buses are free to anyone with an Illinois State ID card, including students and employees. All major retail centers are located along or very near the bus lines.
The main business areas of Normal are located in Uptown Normal (just east of campus), and along Main Street (west of campus). Bloomington has its own historic downtown area centered along Main Street, about 2 miles south of campus. You will find a major retail corridor along the eastern side of the Veteran's Parkway belt.
There are two large shopping malls in town, the Shoppes at College Hills, on College and Veteran's Parkway, and Eastland Mall, on Empire and Veteran's Parkway, anchor many gift and shopping opportunities.
You will find many major midwest grocery chains in town, including Aldi, Cub Foods, Kroger, Jewel, Meijer, Schnucks, Target and Wal-Mart, as well as the common midwest pharmacy chains CVS, Walgreen, and Osco. All are located along city bus lines.
Farmer's markets sell locally sourced produce, meats, flowers, and baked goods on Saturday mornings from May until October in the courthouse square in Bloomington (Main & Jefferson), and on Tuesday afternoons, during the summer months, from 3:30-6:00 local farmers along Constitution Blvd. east of campus in Uptown Normal.
The ISU campus hosts two bookstores, Alamo and Barnes & Noble. Babbitt’s Used Books is just east of campus in Uptown Normal on North Street.
Nearly all the usual restaurant chains are represented in the Twin Cities. Make time to visit many of our fine local eating options, too, from local burger joints to our creative fine dining locations.
